I wonder how much the average waking time depends on the timezone. Spain is very west for its timezone, France is one hour ahead of England, despite being similar in longitude, and Germany is towards the east of its zone. Perhaps Italy and Portugal are the true outliers!

In Spain, not only does the sleeping pattern change, but mealtimes do too. In 1941, the time zone changed from being the same as Portugal and the UK to being the same as Central Europe. One possible explanation is that people just kept their habits at the same time of day. Therefore, the idea of the wrong time zone would definitely explain the shift in Spain's case.

The niece's Spain map is absolutley wonderful. That Basque Country is huge and Valencia ending up landlocked in the center is the kind of creative geography that actually makes the map more memorable than a perfect tracing. Kids have this way of prioritizing what feels important over what's technicaly accurate, and honestly thats not a bad approach for some kinds of thinking.

Yes, it definitely feels way more memorable than an accurate map would have felt :)
